Reading Lesson
Supporting Author's Claims
Learning Target: I can support an authors claim by analyzing the information
in the text and identifying supporting details.

In this lesson, students learn about what author's claim is and why authors include them in their writing. They learn that an author always support their claims (opinions/perspectives) with reasons. Students practice making their own claims and supporting their claims with reasons. During the mini lesson, students follow the "I do" and "we do" by answering questions and contributing to the conversation. Students are assigned independent work for their "you do" that is differentiated based on prior data.

Following the mini lesson, students move into station time. Here, students rotate through various stations throughout the week. One station is always teacher led (small group). Other stations change weekly based and can include technology, partner work, group work, vocabulary, reading projects, or reader's theater.
