Math Lesson

Multiplication using the Area Model

Learning Target: I can find products by using and interpreting partial products with diagrams (area model).

In this lesson, students used the area model to solve various multiplication problems. Students use expanded form and the area model to break down each number to help them solve. Students are also given area models and asked to interpret and explain them. This lesson is a stepping stone leading to the standard algorithm.

Following the mini lesson, students move into station time. Here, students rotate through various stations throughout the week. One station is always teacher led (small group). Other stations change weekly based and can include technology, partner work, group work, math projects, or extra/additional practice (prerequisites/enrichment).
